Well, let’s be honest: for most of us, September is when you decide whether to stay in summer dresses or start wearing a cardigan or jacket because of the cooler air. The best part is that you can add some autumn pieces to your wardrobe without saying goodbye to summer fashion, and knee-high boots are perfect for that!
When Should You Start Wearing Them?
As far as we know, there are no official dates that would allow you to put on your knee-high boots!
Usually, the second half of September is the right time when you should start considering wearing them, depending on the weather rather than on the date. If it’s sunny and warm outside, you are still safe to use your sandals. But once you need to wrap yourself up in a coat or a scarf, it’s the signal to start thinking about boots!
You Don't Have to Get into Autumn Full-Time Just Yet
One of the most beautiful things about September is combining summer and Autumn garments.
It is not necessary to pack up your summer dresses and instantly opt for chunky sweaters and thick coats.
Instead, consider wearing your favourite midi or knee-length dress along with your knee-high boots. Add a light cardigan, denim jacket, or blazer, and you will get yourself an ideal autumn look.
It is comfortable, convenient, and still feminine.
And as far as I am concerned, it is precisely what we want to have when we go for stylish looks after 50.
Knee-high Boots and Jeans
If dresses are not something you prefer to wear, there is no need to worry. Knee-high boots can look equally appealing with your jeans.
All you need to do is wear your favourite pair of jeans with a light sweater, a coat, and your boots. Add a scarf and an accessory, and you will get yourself a perfect autumn look.
Sometimes the easiest outfits turn out to be the best for us.
What Colour Is Right for You?
While black boots are timeless, tan, camel, and chocolate brown are also worth considering.
My favourites are brown boots in early autumn since they are slightly gentler than black and look great with cream, beige, blue jeans, and seasonal colours.
When buying a new pair, consider what else you own in your wardrobe. It is always better to buy a pair that you will be wearing!
A Practical Guide to the Fit of Knee-High Boots
A beautiful pair of boots is nice, but if they're uncomfortable, you won't wear them much. Before purchasing a pair of knee-high boots, spend a couple of minutes checking the fit.
✓ Check the fit of the boot on your calf: It should fit comfortably around your calf, neither pinching nor too loose so that the boot always slips down.
✓ Wear the boots together with the clothing you intend to wear with them: In case you intend to wear your boots with tights or jeans, try them wearing both at the same time. There could be a big difference in the fit of the boots worn over clothes.
✓ Give some space: Your toes should not feel compressed, and you should have enough space for them to wiggle comfortably, especially if you are going to wear them for a few hours.
✓ Walk around in the boots: Don't stay standing before the mirror; go for a walk around the shop and spend some time wearing them. Make sure your heel does not slip inside the boot and that it does not rub anywhere.
✓ Choose the right type of heel: It might be a good choice to choose a lower and wider heel if you are looking for comfortable footwear.
✓ Check the zip: It should easily go up without sticking or pulling. It is especially important for boots fitted around the calf.
✓ Take, for example, the sole: A good grip is something worth considering, especially for the UK’s autumn and winter season, where pavements tend to be wet and slippery.
✓ They won’t fit because you hope that they will stretch: While leather can soften with use, an uncomfortable shoe is never going to become your favourite footwear.
But above all else, consider comfort: If you try them on and immediately find yourself wishing that you could remove them, then it’s safe to say that they’re not the right choice for you!
And Don’t Forget Comfort
Of course, looking good matters a lot. But being comfortable in what you're wearing matters just as much.
I believe that the older we get, the better we get at knowing ourselves and what we want, including our choice of clothing and footwear.
The right pair of knee-high boots is something that makes you feel good every time you put them on, not something that you’re desperate to remove after wearing them for ten minutes.
Make Peace with the Changing Seasons
There’s something nice about the month of September. Summer is not quite over, yet autumn is making its way to town. So, there is no need to fret about your wardrobe being "perfect."
Wear your favourite summer dress and your new boots. Tie a scarf around your neck. Put on a jacket as soon as you get chilly. Combine some of your favourites and some new things.
And if you’re questioning yourself, should you start to wear your knee-high boots?
Should it be the case that it feels slightly chilly in the morning, leaves are changing their colours, and you are longing for that taste of autumn, it would probably be the right time to do so.
